Top 10 Movies to Watch When You’re Sick!

Image

Dear Readers,

current position: Tucked up on the sofa with my inhaler, tea and the laptop. That’s hot.
Not terribly exciting and definitely not what I saw myself doing the second day of July.

With nothing but blogging to do and movies to watch, why not combine the two? Movies are one of my greatest loves. Whenever I’m asked, “What’s you’re favourite film?” I have to explain that they are largely broken down into separate categories such aaas:

  • Musical mood
  • Dramatic mood
  • Sad mood
  • ‘Don’t get me down’ mood
    And of course..
  • Sick.

So, here are my top 10 movies for watching when I’m a bit under the weather:

  1. Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging.
Need I explain?? This is really an all-mood movie. If watching misfortunate Georgia Nicholson attempt to work her way through puberty, boys and an embarrassing family isn’t enough to improve your mood, I’m afraid you are incurable. A moment of silence, please.
  2. Bridget Jones’s Diary.
This is a no-brainer. Bridget Jones is like the grown-up version of Georgia Nicholson and can make just about anyone feel good about their lives. It is virtually impossible not to nod along and laugh as you watch poor Bridget go through her accident-prone life. Of course, how bad to be able to watch Hugh Grant and Colin Firth at the same time? Mmm.
  3. Now is Good.
For some reason there’s nothing I enjoy more than having a good weep at a heart-breaking movie. Snuggle up with a hot cuppa and a box of Kleenex (yes, you will need them) and watch a wonderful romance blossom between Tessa, a 17 year old girl with terminal cancer, and Adam, her neighbour. Seriously, wonderful and weepy is the only way to describe this one. Just watch it.
  4. Pride and Prejudice.
Okay, I’m noticing a pattern. Watching other people’s tragedies seems to be the cure. But who could resist sitting down to watch as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy fall madly in love? I mean… Mr. Darcy…
  5. Little Women.
This little classic makes me smile, laugh and cry through the adventures of four keen sisters. I don’t think this film could ever get old. Wrap up and lose yourself and your sickness in this beautifully told tale.
  6. Rent.
It’s musical, heart-warming, breaking and warming again and so wonderful. Rent will bring you to New York in the 90’s and show the struggles of those living with AIDS and the strong bonds formed between eight loving souls. First released in 2005 and still going strong!
  7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
I’m assuming most people have seen this fantastic and soul-lifting film. Definitely one of my number one tear-jerkers. I’ve seen this film beyond enough times and I love it more every time. If Charlie’s doting ways of life don’t cheer you up then Patrick’s humorous input surely will! (Again, have the Kleenex on hand.)
  8. Harry Potter. All of them.
Particularly the first one. I can’t tell you how comforting ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ is for me. The tale is new enough that Hogwarts is shown through the captivated eyes of the first years and Harry’s battle with Voldemort isn’t as stressing as the later movies. It’s all you need; magic, friendship and heroes.
  9. Anything Baz Luhrmann. Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby, Romeo & Juliet…
The chaotic world that is Luhrmann’s mind will captivate you instantly on screen and make you forget all about your own misery. The explosive world’s brought to life all contain a sense of romance and tragedy… It’s no secret here at number 9 that I love romance and tragedy.
  10. Wish Upon a Star.
My sister suggested this one and it sounds like a keeper. Two sisters switch bodies (think ‘Freaky Friday’) and of course go through the struggle of learning how to switch back. Ultimately cheesy and heart-warming. Really, what more are you looking for?

While I hope none of you are sick, perhaps just bored or having a lazy day, these ten movies always full-fill my cheesy, romance, tragedy-loving state. So, make some tea, get some junk food and snuggle for the day watching nothing but guilty-pleasure films.

Love,
Kerry xx

18: HOGWARTS, LET ME IN

Image

(28th January 2014)

Dear Readers,

as some of you may or may not know, I turned the spectacularly anticipated 18 at the weekend. At first, when the clock struck midnight I was a little disappointed with the lack of emotion or expected change I had awaited. I had not grown (and have not in any amazing length since I was 15) and I had no urge to do typically adult things (such as buy some alcohol, run to the nearest nightclub or buy an exciting little scratch card). In fact, the very first thing to cross my mind was that I was no longer eligible to receive a Hogwart’s Letter. I kid you not, this is an actual disappointment for me.

Every adult I know said something along the lines of “huh-ho she’s a woman now – have to be watching her now – aw so grown up so she is!” I do apologise but in all honesty on the day of my 18th I watched The Little Mermaid, ate Ben & Jerry’s ice-cream and fretted about not having my Cinderella DVD to watch. I’m such a big child in a now adult (?!) body.

Should I be feeling different? When exactly do we grow up? Perhaps there is no moment but instead collective events which contribute towards the growing you. In fairness my age still says “teen”. Maybe I’m the oddball because I don’t go out much and I would quite happily choose the mug of tea over a vodka. I spend my time writing in a blog – that people may or may not be reading, in which case I’m most likely talking to myself – cuddling my cat, Lady Minerva, and searching for good books and films.

So while I may not be doing typically adults things, and maybe I should face up to the real world, I’m quite happy where I am at 18. Curious, willing and hoping I can now enter Hogwarts as a Professor of Transfiguration.

Love,
Kerry xx

2014 – Stay Smiling

Image

(1st January 2014)

Dear Readers,

Happy New Year! May 2014 be bright and merry for you all.  Every year comes with it’s battles and celebrations. I suppose we cannot know light without darkness.

I’m writing to you today not just to wish you a very happy new year, but also to remind those of you in less favorable conditions at the moment that this day, nor New Year’s Eve, foretell how the rest of 2014 will pan out. While some of you may have a had a fantastic countdown and are winding up the gears for 2014, others may not be so fortunate. Some may be feeling sad and have no idea why, (I cry all the time, don’t worry if you do too) others may be going through loss, a break-up or family problems.

Sometimes we expect that on a holiday like Christmas or New Year’s Day that we must feel merry and excited and if we don’t, we think there is something wrong with us. I’m telling you though, they are just days. Numbers. You could feel sad on December 25th and cry all day, and you could feel sad on May 7th, and think “well I’m just having a bad day so it’s alright.” It’s okay on December 25th too.

Don’t base today on how the next 12 months will be. If today is a bad day, it’s a bad day. If tomorrow’s a bad day, it’s a bad day. Leave it in the day. January 3rd could be much more exciting! Remember that there is always something around the corner, no matter how difficult it is to get around it. As (letting my inner fandom out) Dumbledore says in Harry Potter, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.”

Please do have a happy and safe 2014 and take every opportunity which comes your way! I cannot wait to continue blogging with you this year. Stay lovely, include everyone, notice others and don’t forget to take a little me-time! Remember, it’s just a spoonful at a time :)

Love,
Kerry xx
